Preliminary Economic Impact Assessment Report
The Chinese Aluminium Company, CHALCO, is currently preparing a pre-feasibility study to extract and process bauxite from the major bauxite resource located near Aurukun. CHALCO and the Queensland Government are currently considering three locations to develop an Alumina refinery to process bauxite from the Aurukun resource, including Abbott Point (near Bowen), Gladstone and Townsville.
Townsville Enterprise Limited (TEL) commissioned Economic Associates to estimate the indicative regional economic impacts of CHALCO establishing the proposed alumina refinery at Townsville.
This preliminary economic impact assessment only considers the impact over the period of refinery construction. Ongoing impacts from the project are anticipated to be significant, but are difficult to estimate at this stage given the absence of a publicly available operational model.
