North Queensland Energy Forum

North Queensland Energy Forum 2008

With over 70 participants this year, the Townsville Enterprise and Energy Users Association Australia (EUAA) North Queensland Energy Forum was a great success. We wish especially to thank to our major sponsor Ergon Energy and our other sponsors Powerlink, the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy, the Queensland Department of Infrastructure and Planning and Sun Metals Corporation for their generous sponsorship of the event. We also sincerely thank the Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson who flew in especially for the day to give the keynote address.

The presentations given at the forum covered climate change policy and legal issues for business, renewable energy, practical local projects to reduce energy demand, transmission infrastructure for renewable energy, electricity trading, the impact of the looming Queensland LNG industry on the competitiveness of gas-fired electricity generation and an update from the Departments of Mines and Energy and Infrastructure and Planning on progress within the Northern Economic Triangle. Copies of presentations can be found on the economic development website.

With the current uncertainly and dynamism of energy policy, economics and technology, there will be plenty to talk about when Townsville Enterprise and EUAA join together again to present another forum next year.

This year's forum included presentations from:

North Queensland Energy Forum 2007

On the 29th November TEL in conjunction with the Energy Users Association of Australian hosted the 4th annual Energy Forum. The forum was well attended with over 60 participants from Government and industry. The Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning opened the Forum and spoke on the role of government in the energy market as one of stimulating developments rather than one of imposing controls on the market. He indicated that the government was prepared to work with industry in the North to encourage investment in energy generation.

There were ten guest speakers at the forum covering topics including energy infrastructure, demand management, hedging electricity prices using electricity market derivatives, the Queensland State Government’s Climate Smart 2050 initiative, options for competitively priced power in NQ, energy efficiency, carbon trading, the Stanwell ZeroGen project and gas issues including expected price trends in the coming years. Participants were impressed at the diversity and quality of speakers.

The coming of carbon trading, new energy technologies and policies on renewable energy ensure the need for a similar forum next year and Townsville Enterprise and the EUAA are planning to hold the 5th North Queensland Energy forum next year around the same time.
